For whom did you vote? Please don't tell me!

today i wanted to mention a newfound peeve of mine... besides all the voting ads that are on TV plus the annoying phone calls (mentioned by nathaniel on his blog). you know what i hate? people who advertise who they vote for. why does one feel the need to share their vote? as if someone is so unable to think for themselves that they are going to "do what you did" just because you did it... (my mom always said "if everyone jumps off a bridge are you going to do it too?") even 2 months ago when i had a political survey over the phone (yes, they actually called me), when i was asked whom i planned to vote for [for president], i told her i didn't know. which i did know, but i wasn't going to tell her. i'm happy to share some of my views (like the ones i blog about such as abortion, animal cruelty, the addition of BHA/T to foods, or even wastewater or what's for dinner). but who i (or you) voted for is just one of those things that, in my opinion, you just shouldn't share. EVEN IF you are working for the, for example, democratic party - and you are persuading/encouraging people to vote for john kerry (we'll just use him since that was 4 years ago plus i could find an image to go along with it...), it really doesn't have to mean that YOU will vote for him too. do you hear obama or mccain telling everyone who THEY voted for? no. you would assume they voted for themselves, but... maybe they didn't! we'll never know! and i will even go as far as to put A VOTE in the area of "things you shouldn't tell someone" along with whether you had sex last night, or whether you have atheletes foot, or whether you have a sore on the inside of your mouth. PRIVATE things. PRIVATE things you don't tell the general public or even some of your best friends and family. (i.e., even though my mom and i have discussed the presidency, i don't think either one of us has come out and said exactly who we voted for... i think we both know, but we haven't said it.) so maybe i've offended someone who reads my blog, someone who is wearing that "i voted for john kerry" pin as shown above. please explain why you like to advertise who you voted for! i'd like to understand it!

  1. Don't blame me, I voted for Jed Bush!

    Continue the dream in 2012...

    :-(

Equating saying who you voted for President with whether or not you had sex last night. Nice!

Usually, you can tell by their hair if they had "relations", but it's much harder to determine who they voted for. Maybe if they veer to the left or right when they walk, but that could also be used to tell if they had "relations."

Eh, voting or sex, either way, YOU'RE SCREWED!!!

    /sorry Mahmaw...

  2. I guess some people just want to show their support for "whomever". Similar, in a way, to the people that like to put bumper stickers/magnets on their cars saying "Support our troops" or "I pledge my support for breast cancer research" or stuff like that.
I don't think they could reasonably believe that their buttons (or ca-zillion signs in their yard) could really sway someone over to "their side". If they do, they're smoking something.

I agree with you; most people know who they will vote for or what they will or will not support so no one else will change their mind (unless someone tells them something they did not know but wearing a button doesn't convey that knowledge as far as I know!)

This is off subject a bit but a few months ago, there was a lady in our neighborhood who kept coming to our door trying to get us to sign a petition to keep an ABC store out of the shopping center near our house. Well, frankly, we would LIKE one there! It would mean not having to drive farther away when we are in need of Bombay Sapphire!

Her argument was so weak and she didn't have any data. "EVERYONE knows that this will mean we'll get winos and other derelicts hanging out in the parking lot NEAR OUR HOMES and OUR CHILDREN!"

    Frankly, BULLSH$$!

And, oh, by the way, there IS a grocery store in the shopping center that sells beer and wine.

Ok, now I am rambling but what I really can't stand are people who voice their opinion, LOUDLY, but can't back up why they feel that way.

    End of rant!

As for disclosing whom you voted for, I think it's not a hot idea, unless the people you are with are wise enough to allow you your own opinion (and vice versa) if it differs from theirs.

  3. I think it comes from mom and dad. I cannot think of a time when I knew who they voted for -- I could usually assume, but who knows if I were right. Rob and I don't discuss politics. It is something that I don't want to talk about because I have such swaying views. Am I a Republican? By definition of having registered that way, yes. Do I agree with all things Republican? Absolutely not. I don't discuss politics because I don't want to be lumped in with the group - republican. Want to discuss a particular topic, sure, but there is no telling which way I will come from :-)

I think that people put the signs up, etc for the wrong reasons. I don't want to feel like somebody is trying to tell me what to do. HOWEVER... I saw some signs around here (not on post... not allowed) that had websites on them. If the sign is meant to inform, I am all for it. One such sign said "Know your stand on proposition ##" and had a website. Cool. Put the facts out there and let people make their own decision!

I do miss getting a "I Voted" sticker since I did absentee. I always proudly wore that one!

  4. I should have said I don't want to be lumped in with a group - republican OR democrat.

  5. I think some people are just proud, excited, happy and want to shout it to the world. It's amazing to be proud of our leaders and express who we want them to be.

  6. interesting. i just performed 2 google searches on "i voted for..." [insert mccain, obama] and the ONLY one that had a sticker or sign that said such was for obama.

suppose now that i thnk about it, i haven't even heard anyone declare "i'm voted/ing for mccain" yet clearly he is being voted for... since around half of north carolinian have voted/are voting for him.

and melissa, i'm with you on the "we got it from mom and dad" (not discussing politics). and presumably, you and rob probably voted for the same person. there are "fundamental differences" (to quote the candidates) between a democrat and a republican, and i would guess that you and rob likely lie in the same spot (right wing, left wing, moderate, socialist, or whatever). i know that is the case in my home.

oh snap! i gotta run. don't have time to write more...

    Yup, I'm a conservative socialist.

Everybody should get a slice of the pie, but just a little slice because we need to conserve the pie. Mmm, pie.

  8. There are actually some pretty "fundamental" differences in mine and Rob's beliefs. It is okay though because the KEY is to respect that the other person has a right to their opinion.

Oh... and on this note. Imagine my frustration when G gets off of the bus and promptly tells me that *her* teacher voted for Obama and wanted to know who I voted for. I told her it was none of her business.

  9. I don't know where you and melissa got it from, but it sure missed me. I don't see anything wrong with discussing politics or who you voted for. I'm not going to start a conversation with "hi, i voted for ------. who did you vote for?" but if politics is the topic and you are talking about candidates and their policies and who you like or agree with, it's obvious who you voted for.

I DO NOT like however fliers that tell me who to vote for. when mom and i went to the polls to vote early, a man gave me the republican candidate flier and a woman gave mom the democratic flier. we looked them over, then switched. i got so angry because the democratic one said:

    IT'S SIMPLE
    1. Vote for Obama-Biden.
    2. Vote straight ticket.
    3. Submit ballot.

Bull shit. dont tell me what to do!

Today when i got home from work there was a flier on all the doorknobs of my apartment building telling me to GO VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN. ERRR. let me make up my own mind. thank you very much.

  10. WOW what a hot topic!
First of all, 'thaniel, it's ok.
Next, I do know who Katelyn voted for because she did wear a sticker and was more than willing to talk about it. She knows that I am a registered Democrat. She does not have a clue who I voted for for President, and neither do you other two or Dad for that matter (other than the fact that I either voted for one of the two running or a write in for Nathaniel). That is a personal thing that I am not willing to talk about so that I won't hurt your feelings and you won't hurt mine. Makes it easier just to keep my mouth shut! I learned to agree with both sides and not get in the middle of either side! But, I am not sitting on the fence. The person I voted for I did out of respect for the things he said and the history that he has that makes him the person that he is. Unfortunately, neither candidate is going to do as much as they think they can. Thank goodness, Melissa you pointed this out to me years ago, there are so many checks and balances to keep one person from going overboard on anything. Enough. It's almost over. For 4 years (or 2 years if they start campaigning 2 years ahead).

  11. People have to say who they voted for because they treat elections like they are sporting events.

My candidate won, yours lost. Ha Ha! It's not about Country. It's about Ideologies and Pride.

I am quite disgusted with the media, and the "gloating" (and subsequent "whining")I hear from my peers.

I find it quite interesting how polarized our country has become since the advent of mainstream media and the internet. The last 3 elections have been between 2% popular vote (or so) and I think that is a testament to how polarized the citizens are.

And why are they polarized? I believe because we are constantly bombarded with images, sound bites, news clips, etc. about how one side is screwing over the other.

And frankly, it all began when Clinton was getting hummers in the "O"-val Office and using cigars in a non-aficionado way.

Hence, news is no longer news. It's Op-ed pieces.

    >*******************

As for the election, either candidate would have been just fine as President.

So, quit your bragging and quit your whining, there is plenty of work to be done.
